Who We Are

The Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence (AM-COE), based in Derby, UK, is a fast-growing research and production hub specialising in vat-photopolymerisation 3D printing of ceramics, polymers, composites, and advanced functional components. Located at 33 Shaftesbury Street South, AM-COE operates the largest ceramic 3D-printing farm in Europe, delivering advanced manufacturing and R&D services to high-performance sectors including aerospace, industrial gas turbines (IGT), and next-generation energy systems. Our mission is to push the boundaries of functional, high-performance additive manufacturing. From ceramic core production to precision wax patterns and innovative energy materials, we support regulated, technically demanding industries with tailored solutions that meet the highest quality and performance standards.

Role Description

You’ll work hands-on across the full project lifecycle—taking concepts from CAD through CNC machining, electrical build and test, then verifying quality using CMM and data-driven inspection methods. You’ll collaborate closely with head scientists, senior engineers and technicians to develop, prototype and deliver innovative mechatronic systems. This fixed-term role one year could lead to a permanent position upon completion and review.

Key Responsibilities

•Create and refine 3D CAD models and engineering drawings.

•Program, set up, and operate CNC machines for prototype and small-batch parts.

•Design, wire, and test electrical control panels, harnesses, and embedded controllers.

•Carry out quality inspections, analyse inspection data, and generate reports to drive continuous improvement.

•Assist with assembly, commissioning, and fault-finding on mechatronic and electromechanical systems.

•Maintain accurate documentation, including bills of materials, test reports, and maintenance manuals.

•Support prototype development, including wiring and troubleshooting of systems.

•Participate in the setup of new machines and equipment.

•Contribute to various other technical tasks as needed; additional responsibilities may be discussed and assigned based on project requirements.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Essential:

•Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field

•Proficiency in CAD software and basic CNC programming

•Good understanding of electrical schematics, wiring, and control components•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills•Excellent attention to detail and documentation•Effective communication and collaboration skills, especially with technical staff•Full commitment to Health & Safety and proper PPE usage

Desirable:

•Experience programming or troubleshooting PLCs or embedded systems

•Familiarity with additive/subtractive prototyping methods•Knowledge of GD&T, machining standards, and quality systems (e.g. ISO 9001, AS9100)

•Basic understanding of materials characterisation techniques (e.g., TGA, DSC, SEM, FTIR)•Familiarity with polymer chemistry, ceramic processing, or photopolymerisation is a plus

•Interest in materials science, composites, or chemical–mechanical interactions in high-performance manufacturingRole
